Bitcoin Software Clients

Bitcoin Software Clients

The bitcoin wallet is the basis of the user experience.  It's where all of your bitcoins are accessed.  Receiving payments, or paying vendors for the latest item, it all starts with your wallet.  There are several to choose from.  It's worthwhile to review your options and choose the wallet that suits your needs best.

In this section we will discuss the software-based bitcoin wallets.

Bitcoin-Qt - The original Bitcoin wallet

Bitcoin-Qt is the original Bitcoin client and it builds the backbone of the network. It offers the highest levels of security, privacy, and stability. However it has fewer features and it takes a lot of space and memory. ~bitcoin.org

Bitcoin-Qt is a fundamentally sound wallet, and is the basis of bitcoin development by the core developers.  If you wish to mine your own bitcoins, then you will want to use bitcoin-qt (bitcoind).  By using the bitcoin-Qt client, it helps the bitcoin network by relaying block information to the network at large.  You can download the original bitcoin-qt client here: http://bitcoin.org/en/download

Multibit is a lightweight wallet client, that is great for simple day-to-day use of bitcoin.  It does not download the full transactional blockchain, and does not help facilitate the bitcoin network by relaying transaction information to the network.  You cannot mine using Multibit.  You can find our more information and download Multibit here: https://multibit.org/

Armory is a great addition for your bitcoin needs.  Armory runs in addition to your bitcoin-Qt (or bitcoind) client.  You can also run armory offline to create an extra layer of protection.

You can use Armory for all of your Bitcoin needs.  It allows you to maintain multiple wallets, with or without encryption.  Maintain offline wallets for maximum security from online attackers.  Import addresses created with VanityGen or sweep funds from Casascius physical Bitcoins.  Toggle between “Standard” and “Advanced” modes to guarantee an appropriate set of options and information for your Bitcoin experience level.  And all this is available through an intuitive user interface that brings all the most advanced features of Bitcoin to your computer, without needing to be a Bitcoin expert!  ~bitcoinarmory.com

Electrum - Fast and simple wallet

Electrum's focus is speed and simplicity, with low resource usage. It uses remote servers that handle the most complicated parts of the Bitcoin system, and it allows you to recover your wallet from a secret phrase.

Electrum cannot be used for mining. It does not relay transaction data to help the bitcoin network; however, it has very unique, and useful features.

Electrum is an easy to use Bitcoin client. It protects you from losing coins in a backup mistake or computer failure, because your wallet can be recovered from a secret phrase that you can write on paper or learn by heart. There is no waiting time when you start the client, because it does not download the Bitcoin blockchain. ~electrum.org
